Protect Yourself from Scammers: Tips from SLO Credit Union

At SLO Credit Union, your security is our top priority. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but by staying informed and cautious, you can help protect your personal and financial information. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

1. Verify Unexpected Phone Calls

If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from a company—or even your financial institution—and you’re unsure about the legitimacy, hang up immediately. Do not provide any personal or financial information.
Instead:

  • Visit the company’s official website and call a verified number.
  • For bank-related calls, use the number on the back of your debit or credit card to contact us directly.

2. Be Cautious with Investment Offers

Promises of high returns with low risk are classic red flags for scams.
Before investing:

  • Research the business using trusted sources such as the Better Business Bureau or state regulatory agencies.
  • Be especially cautious with offers that involve cryptocurrency, as scammers often use it to avoid detection and traceability.

3. Don’t Pay with Gift Cards

Legitimate organizations—including utility companies, banks, and government agencies—will never request payment in the form of a gift card.
If someone asks you to:

  • Purchase a gift card and send the number on the back—don’t do it.
  • Treat it as a strong sign of a scam and report it.

4. Watch for Urgent or Threatening Messages

Scammers often use pressure tactics, such as:

  • Claiming your account is compromised
  • Threatening to cut off services
  • Warning of legal consequences

Take a moment to breathe. Don’t make decisions based on fear. Speak with a trusted friend, family member, or your financial institution before taking action.

5. Never Send Money to Someone You Haven’t Met

Online connections can feel real, but scammers often build fake relationships to gain your trust and then ask for money.
Be especially cautious if:

  • Someone you’ve never met in person asks for financial help
  • The request involves investment opportunities, particularly in cryptocurrency

Stay Vigilant. Stay Protected.

If you ever feel unsure or need help verifying a financial request, contact SLO Credit Union directly. We’re here to help you stay informed and secure.
